Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Simulation - Hydrogen: Led Gas Dispersion, Venting & Safety Case for Confined Installations

07 May 2024, 11:10 am

Client Context
Industrial client integrating high-pressure gas systems into depots, enclosures, and semi-confined plantrooms.

What we did
Safety-critical CFD and regulatory interface consultant.

Technical Scope & Depth

  • CFD modelling of gas release scenarios under worst-case conditions:

    • Low-wind (<2 m/s) dispersion

    • Jet releases from PRDs and flanges

    • Accumulation in roof voids and equipment corridors

  • Translation of CFD outputs into:

    • Hazardous area zoning (DSEAR/ATEX logic)

    • Vent stack geometry and placement

    • Detection and emergency response strategies

  • Alignment with ISO/TR 15916-style hydrogen doctrine, applied rigorously to other light gases.

Outcome

  • Allowed the client to justify compact layouts without over-engineering civil works.

  • Replaced conservative assumptions with quantified, defendable safety margins.

  • Directly transferable to CO₂ capture units deployed indoors, near buildings, or in retrofitted industrial sites.
