Design Substantiation of a Barrel Lifter

The design substantiation was carried out for a nuclear client of ours, who specialises in material handling systems. The stipulated Safe Working Load (SWL) was 2,500kg. Normal operational load was 1,200kg.

The static strength assessment was carried out using Ansys suite of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software.

The fatigue strength assessment was carried out in accordance with theoretical principles.

The assessment was carried out to meet the requirements of BS2573 Part 2 - Rules for the design of cranes. Specification for classification, stress calculations and design of mechanisms.

This substantiation exercise confirmed that the existing design of this barrel lifter would satisfy the stipulated static and fatigue strength requirements.

Business Benefits: This design substantiation exercise enhanced confidence in the capability of this design to perform its intended activity over the stipulated period. In addition, it also helped the component obtain the necessary certifications and markings.
